Vikky Magazine

As a kid my mum bought me this magazine called Vikky. Every issue Vikky went to a different country or tried out a new career. It was great magazine I got a free doll and then clothes each issue that went along with the theme plus the clothes fitted my barbie dolls (added bonus).

There is a new magazine out now that very similar Barbie – I wish I had a little girl right now so I could buy it for her, I was tempted to get it for myself.

(Not sponsored I just saw the magazine the other day and it reminded me of the one I got as a kid)

TV

I had a number to TV shows back when I was a kid that I loved to watch.

Where’s Wally?
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
Ducktales
The original Round the Twist
Strawberry Shortcake
The Smurfs
The Snorkles

I remember I could watch my shows between 3:30pm – 5:00pm when dad got home and we had then put on Catch Phase, Wheel of Fortune and then the 6 o’clock news.

What shows did you love as a kid?

The Meaning of Friendship

Today’s theme is Friendship. What is friendship?

To me there are many different kinds of friendship. It can be that person you go shopping with or see movies or go out to lunch. It can be that person at work you walk with during breaks and chat about so many random things. It can be your family that you hang out with and run to when times get tough and share life with. It can be the jokes you share with your husband and being able to share things with you can’t tell anyone else. It can be play times you have with your niece and nephew where no one and no problem exists expect them right now. It can be the blogs you follow and the stories you read and feel like you are part of someone else world.

I’ve got a number of different friendships in my life, all the above are examples from my life. I’ve got one friend I go on day trips with and shopping, 2 friends I catch up with for coffee every now and then, work ladies to chat to during the work hours, my family, my husband, my sweet little niece and nephew and blogs that I love to read and comment on. I’ve only just started to realise lately that I actually do have friends, ok maybe they are not the way I thought they should be or have the ones I can ring crying (expect family and husband) or go out with all the time or be my bff (well besides my mum and MJ) but they are my friends. They are people that I am walking this journey of life with and they are great bunch of people, even if most of them a bit mad (maybe that’s why we get along – ha ha)

What does friendship mean to you? What do you think embodies friendship? Please share I’d love to hear more.

Pre-school

How cool was Pre-School, it wasn't quite school yet and you didn't have to wear school shoes and got to play all day while learning too.

I loved pre-school, I loved the water games and painting plus you only went 2 - 3 days a week.

Here's a picture of my all ready for my first day.

Hair Romance

Tuesdays theme was hair, there isn't really anything nostalgic I could think of. There was the one time I cut a chunk of my hair off cause it was in the way but we won't go there.

So I thought I'd share with you a great blog called Hair Romance. I'm not quite sure how I found this one but I love the styles. I've got dead straight hair and it holds nothing, no matter how much hair spray you put in it so all I can do is a ponytail or leave it out but I'm cool with that. I love looking at the ideas and pretending.

Head over there and see for yourself all the great hair ideas.

Colourful Holidays

School holidays start this weekend here in Sydney, not that means much in our household, other than traffic is a little bit quieter getting to work.

I loved school holidays when I was a kid. Most of them we would go away camping, all of us (Mum, dad and us 4 kids) sometimes Granny and Poppy would come along too. They were always fun, yes they were very colourful holidays.

We would go on picnics, fishing (sometimes eel fishing too), Poppy would show us how to make a rock float (yes there is a particular rock that can float), beaches, rock pools, gold panning, snow, bike riding all day long till you butt was numb, annoying fire ants, making friends with the other kids in the caravan park, boiled eel with butter for breakfast (if we had caught any), card games at night, watching dad lose rummy to a 6 year old (me), long car trips with lollies, eye spy and number plate games. Plus rain, we always seemed to bring the rain, but they were still fun, but I certainly don't miss the pee bucket (for night time bathroom trips).

It was great time to grow up, no tv, no internet, no smart phones etc. Just family, books, card games and outings.

I look forward to taking my kids camping one day and hope we can have just as much fun but without the pee bucket.

What's your favourite holiday memories?

I think next time I might like to camp out like this (image found at Recreative Blog)

Family Day Out

On Sunday we had a family day out in the city. It was my sister-in-law's birthday the other week and we didn't get a chance to celebrate as a family on the day so we all got together and headed into Nick's Seafood Bar & Grill. Where my dad work's he gets given lots of gift vouchers at Christmas time and this Christmas just past he was given $200 voucher for Nick's Seafood (so we're very lucky).

It was a cold and rainy day in the city but it didn't dampen our spirits for fun. I got to hang out with my niece and nephew so that was the best part.

The food was oh so yummy. We had a bread platter to share for entrée and then for mains I had the Golden Fried King Prawns with passion-fruit sauce and a side of creamy mash. I couldn't fit in dessert so I just had a very warming hot chocolate.

It's was nice heading in

Not so nice heading back - pouring rain

Films worth watching

MJ and I are working our way through some interesting films each Saturday night - Star Trek.

We skipped the first movie - MJ insisted we did - apparently it's super slow and boring.

We have so far seen Spock die and come back to life, a madman from the past kill people, find out Kirk has a son and then see him be killed, seen them travel back in time to steal a whale and bring it to their present time to save the world and last night we saw them meet "God". Next week we'll see them make peace with the Klingons.

I seriously wonder what the creators of theses movies were smoking when they came up with the ideas, but they are a bit of fun to watch together.

Kasey Chambers Live

The other night I was lucky enough to have enough money to buy a ticket to a Kasey Chambers concert. I've seen her twice before and find her a really entertainer. This one didn't disappoint me either, even my friend who came who knew only 2 of her songs enjoyed herself.

I really recommend her music, yes it is country but it's not annoying country (well I don't think so).

Not the greatest photos but it's hard on an Iphone in the dark.

Minnamurra Rainforest

Yesterday I got to tick off another item on my 101 list and went on the Minnamurra Rainforest bushwalk.

Wow it was so beautiful. MJ is on holidays from work this week so we decided to go on a little day trip down the coast.

I very much recommend the walk it was stunning. The waterfall walk is the best, it's a little steep to get there but it's so worth it. When we reached the waterfall I felt like I had been sucked into a storybook, it was breathtaking. I'm sure I saw fairies dancing around the rocks.

We saw the wonderful lyrebirds all through the walk - what a beautiful bird.

Heading back to the 1980s

Who remembers Popples?

I had one back when I was little (my next door neighbour gave me her's) and I loved that toy. It was such a cool soft toy being able to flip them inside their own little pouch.

A few years ago they did make a little bit of a come back and my friend bought one. Well she didn't want it any more and so I nabbed it.

As you can see there is a bit of differences between the old and the new.

What was your favourite childhood toy?

We're going to Rio

If you were surfing Facebook on Tuesday night you might have seen a little bit of good news - The Socceroos are heading to the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Rio. We won the qualifier. I'm so excited.

In our house soccer is a sport followed very closely (or as MJ calls it - the real football). We wanted to go to the game but just didn't quite have enough money ($80) so we celebrated it at home in style. We donned all our soccer paraphernalia (including face paint) and sat in the nice warmth of the heater (as it was pouring rain outside and freezing) and ate ribs and wedges while watching us win 1 - 0 in the 82nd minute.

It bought back many memories of when we were lucky enough back in 2005 to actually go the qualifier live (and had to pay $195 per ticket) and watch John Aloisi put that penalty into the back of the net to send us into the world cup for the first time in 32 years, and now we have done it 3 world cups in a row.

Sunday Morning Pancakes

Growing up, Sundays were always days with either pancakes or bacon and eggs after Sunday School. Yesterday MJ and I had our own Pancake Sunday, it was good to get into the kitchen together and cook as a couple (even if it is only pancakes).

Do you have a special Sunday breakfast?

Yes it is a packet mix but it was given to us free (left over from a Pancake Tuesday morning tea at my dad's work)

Condiments of choice
Final product - oh so good.

Old Fashioned Picnic

The other day MJ and I had ourselves an old fashioned picnic down by the river. I love picnic, we use to have them all the time as kids.

I cooked and baked us up some yummy picnic food - buttermilk chicken, pasta salad and banana caramel muffins.

The chicken and muffins were both Nigella recipes so there's a few more down I've tried now.

Here's my reviews:

Title: Buttermilk Roast Chicken
Book/Page #: Nigella Express #274
Date cooked: 09/06/2013
Review out of 5: 4
Eat again: Yes
Notes: None really - better when eaten hot

Title: Banana Butterscotch Muffins (here's a link to the recipe)
Book/Page #: Nigella Express #262
Date cooked: 09/06/2013
Review out of 5: 5
Eat again: Yes
Notes: I didn't have butterscotch chips so I used caramel - just as good.

What picnic foods do you like to cook up?

Oh Mother - sick

My poor mother - I was meant to go and help her today with my little niece but she's so choked up with a cold that she sounds more like a man than woman. I started to give her some advice on how to help that throat of hers (just like she does when I get sick) - I told her to sip Camomile, Vanilla and Honey tea - oh so soothing for your throat.

While talking with her it got me remembering the times when I was little and how she looked after me when I was sick. I remember she would move the recliner to the back door so it sat in the sun all day, I got the remote control for the day (one of the best parts), Ski Double Up yoghurt to eat for my sore throat (I still can only eat these when I'm sick as I just associate them with being sick - they are so yummy), ginger tea (fresh ginger with boiling water) to sip and Olbas Oil rubbed all over me. My mum would take such good care of me and I feel lost not being able to help her as she didn't want me to come over so I won't get sick - very sternly told not to come.

What did your mum do when you were sick? What remedies do you use now?

The Ulimate House Party

I have a few days of Month of to catch up on so I thought I'd combined them into one big post (party, comic, game, word, house, dress).

Remember back when you were a teenager (or you might still be one) and there were house parties to attend? Sadly I never did get invited to one or get to throw one either, but if I had I think it might have gone a little something like this:
